The Wisconsin Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects (WI-ASLA) presented its 2018 Honor Award for Analysis and Planning to the City of Appleton and MSA Senior Landscape Architect Dan Williams, PLA, ASLA, AHLP, for the Master Plan for Ellen Kort Peace Park.
Over time, the Fox River Valley, historically known as Paper Valley, has replaced paper mills with City utilities. Today, the community is transforming a deserted seven-acre industrial space into a beautiful park dedicated to Ellen Kort, Wisconsin’s first Poet Laureate. Williams’ leadership guided the effort with the City of Appleton and a park stakeholder group, which included Ellen’s family, through a Master Plan effort culminating with public and council presentations.
“What makes the design of Ellen Kort Peace Park unique is the spaces created by the forms of the walkways, topography, gardens and features,” said Williams. “The City, family and friends wished to have a park that honored Ellen as a space, not a memorial. These park spaces represent Ellen’s favorite forms and landscapes that were often described in her writings.”
