Disaster Recovery and Water System Improvements
Client: Villgae of Gifford
Location: Gifford, IL
The November 2013 tornado destroyed Gifford’s water treatment plant, leaving only the piping.
Minutes after an EF-3 tornado swept through Gifford, IL on November 17, 2013, the cleanup work began. The Village turned to MSA to help plan its strategy for obtaining recovery assistance. With MSA’s help, the Village received two federal grants through the Emergency Community Water Assistance Grant Program. The community secured $500,000 in grant funding to help finance a new water treatment plant, and another $150,000 to help cover the costs of a new water tower.
The community’s Capital Improvement Plan had already identified the construction of a new water tower as a priority. The existing 50-year-old tower, which was already damaged by the tornado, was not large enough to accommodate Gifford’s growth projections for the next 30 years. MSA worked with Gifford to design a new 150,000-gallon water tower to serve the community well into the future.
