Landfill Cover System Design
Client: Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
Location: Long Prairie , MN
MSA recommended that the clay cap cover of the former Long Prairie Landfill be restricted to reuse as buffer, with an additional six inches of sand prior to the geomembrane.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency hired MSA to evaluate site conditions of the former Long Prairie Landfill and make recommendations for improvements to its cover system and gas migration. The scope of the work included test pit excavations, site topographic survey and design alternatives analysis.
The final design plan consolidated the waste from 14 acres to 10 acres, and waste was pulled back from the encroaching wetlands. The grade and slopes were also shaped to provide proper drainage for runoff. Additionally, approximately 14 passive gas vents were installed to alleviate gas migration issues.
