The City of Ames contracted with MSA to provide design services for the reconstruction of North Dakota Avenue and its intersection with Ontario Street — a $1.2-million project funded through a combination of Iowa DOT SWAP funds and City of Ames Local Funds.
Design included Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) pavement surface, ADA-compliant sidewalk ramps, replacement of storm sewer intakes, spot sanitary sewer repairs, and railroad approach improvements.
The project required close coordination with residents, private utilities, the local Sawyer Elementary School, and Union Pacific Railroad. The project was constructed under traffic, with one half of the road constructed at a time. This allowed the public, neighboring middle school, and CyRide (public bus transportation) to maintain regular use, all while supporting ongoing special events in a neighborhood bustling with residential, school and recreational activity.
The project was constructed in 2022.
