Krueger-Haskell Golf Couse has a long and prominent history in the City of Beloit, Wisconsin.

The course originally opened on May 1, 1927 and is set within a beautifully rolling and wooded terrain adjacent to the Rock River and just north of the Wisconsin-Illinois border.

An 18-hole, par 70, 6,158-yard course, Krueger-Haskell provided the perfect site opportunity for the City of Beloit to implement a portion of its Master Stormwater Plan. The plan identified the course as a prime location for a stormwater management pond. It was determined that an 11-acre pond would be an appropriate size and would provide a 63 percent reduction in Total Suspended Solids (TSS).

The challenge was constructing a pond of this size within the existing parameters of the golf course, a move that would greatly impact the usable playing area of the course. MSA’s project approach was to lay out a series of smaller ponds that would more subtly fit into the existing terrain and golf course layout, then conduct calculations in order to determine which layout would optimize the pollutant removal abilities of the smaller ponds.

This optimization included looking at how flows should be “split” before going into the ponds (to avoid hydraulic overload) and how ponds should be paired up to work in series. Ultimately, it was determined that a design consisting of four separate ponds totaling about five acres would remove nearly 75 percent of TSS—a higher removal than anticipated in the master plan—with a smaller, more viable footprint area.

The resulting stormwater pond design has significantly improved TSS reduction within the golf course and has provided unique and aesthetically-pleasing additions to the landscape. This beloved local course celebrated 91 years of service in 2018 and looks forward to a long, and equally successful future.
