The internship program at MSA is shaping up to be one of the strongest yet, with a record 29 interns joining our firm for the summer, six of whom are returning for a second year. There is nothing better than inviting fresh perspectives and insights into our offices—learning from these students as they learn from us.
What does the role of an intern at MSA look like? Collaborative hands-on learning, an abundance of information and the opportunity to gain irreplaceable, working knowledge of the life of a professional in the AEC industry—all in tandem with a fun and resourceful MSA team to guide and mentor them along the way.
“It is great to see these college students apply what they learn in the classroom to the design and construction of a project in the field,” commented Kevin Lord, municipal engineer, surveyor and team leader at MSA in Madison, Wis. “Having them interact with contractors and staff to complete a project to the client’s desires helps them better understand the backbone behind what they’re learning in school.”
When it comes time for our interns to return to college, they take with them a new portfolio of project experience and education to their next venture. A number of internships result in job offers at MSA as well, and we are always thrilled to present up-and-coming engineers with the opportunity to become full-time members of the MSA team.
Some members of our current leadership team, in fact, started as MSA interns. Chief Operating Officer and Chairman of the Board, Mike Statz, is one of those individuals. Beginning as a civil engineering student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Mike later went on to earn his M.B.A. and become a licensed professional engineer in three states—as well as a certified bridge inspector. Now with over 25 years of service at MSA, he is the perfect representation of the growth and success of the company and the kind of professional development we hope to continue to foster moving forward.
The human resources team at MSA continues to lead in this effort—identifying, recruiting, onboarding and developing new employees in order to match the expanding needs of the firm. As a company that spans 16 offices across Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Georgia and Texas—with an ever-growing portfolio of work— the need to grow our team of qualified professionals remains essential.
“Recruiting for MSA is very rewarding and satisfying experience,” commented Alicia Fluhr, HR business partner and lead recruiter for the internship program. “I treasure each relationship I have with my candidates and realize what an impact these internship experiences have on our interns’ and co-ops’ professional careers. Knowing that I helped change someone’s life for the better is an amazing achievement.”
