The City of Mosinee is nestled along the Wisconsin River in the central part of the state. Already known for fishing, boating and hiking, the City wanted to expand its recreational offerings by continuing the development of its multi-use trail system. A major component of this project included extending the Wisconsin Riverwoods Trail, a 10-foot-wide asphalt trail located on the west side of the river. Favored by pedestrians and bicyclists alike, this project continued the existing trail from Chuck’s Boat Landing south approximately 1.3 miles to Edgewood Park, and ultimately to S. Range Line Road. It also included two new residential connections on Elm Street and Novak Street. The completed connection provides a safe, dedicated multi-use trail from Main Street, Mosinee, south along the banks of the Wisconsin River to Edgewood Park.
This new segment of the trail is primarily located on Consolidated Power Company property. Extensive coordination was required between Consolidated Power Company and the City to develop a route that met the goals of the project while meeting setbacks from an existing eagle’s nest and mitigating wetland impacts. The project required the construction of a 75-foot elevated timber boardwalk to cross the sensitive wetland area and provides two scenic river overlooks.
The design and construction process for the Wisconsin Riverwoods Trail followed the Sponsor’s Guide for Non-Traditional Project Implementation and was funded using WisDOT TE (TAP) grant dollars.
