The American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) of Iowa recently announced its juried selection of 2022 Engineering Excellence Award winners. The City of Sumner, in partnership with MSA Professional Services, Inc. (MSA) was chosen to receive an Engineering Achievement Award in the Special Projects category for the design and implementation of the community’s new stormwater detention basin system.
Engineering Achievement Award submissions are appraised on five categories: uniqueness or innovative application of new or existing techniques; future value to the engineering profession and perception by the public; social, economic and sustainable development considerations; complexity; and successful fulfillment of client/owner needs.
The Sumner detention basin project consists of three separate basins that span 17 acres in size and service a 285-acre watershed. Together, they provide approximately 86.4 acre-feet of storage, each with an emergency 15-foot-wide spillway. Collectively, the basins are expected to reduce peak 100-year flows by nearly 85%. The City of Sumner and MSA developed the system to meet the 100-year flood threshold, surpassing FEMA standards and providing a robust new level of protection for the community and its residents.
“MSA and the City of Sumner are honored to receive this recognition,” remarked Jason Miller, PE, vice president of water services at MSA. “We extend our congratulations to our partners at the city and to all the other award recipients as well.”
ACEC Iowa Engineering Excellence Award recipients will be formally recognized at an awards ceremony during the chapter’s annual conference May 18, 2022.
